2014-02-13 10.39.06

Foyle Women’s Information Network and the Women’s Centre took part in the launch of the Women’s Regional Consortium in Wellington Park Hotel, Belfast, on Thursday February 13th, 2014.

This highly successful event saw over 100 women from throughout the region gathering together to celebrate the launch and discuss the issues that impact women’s lives in disadvantaged and rural areas.

During round table discussions women looked at a wide range of issues including, education & training, welfare reform, health & social care, and childcare.

The new Consortium consists of seven women’s sector organisations, committed to working in partnership with each other to ensure women’s organisations are given the best possible support. The seven groups involved are:

  • Foyle Women’s Information Network
  • Women’s Resource and Development Agency
  • Training for Women Network (Lead Partner)
  • Women’s Support Network
  • NI Rural Women’s Network
  • Women’s TEC
  • Women’s Centre Derry

The Consortium was formed in response to a survey carried out by DSD and DARD which identified a need for greater support for women in disadvantaged and rural areas. The Consortium has identified five key targets

  1. Advocacy and leadership for women in disadvantaged and rural areas
  2. Influence policy for women in disadvantaged and rural areas
  3. Research for women in disadvantaged and rural areas
  4. Service support for women in disadvantaged and rural areas
  5. Engagement for women in disadvantaged and rural areas

Overall, the consortium will be the link between government & statutory agencies and women in disadvantaged and rural areas. The idea is to ensure a continuous flow of information between government and the sector.

The Consortium aim to ensure that women’s organisations are made aware of consultations, government planning and policy implementation etc. However this is a two way flow of information with the Consortium also feeding back to the powers that be, the views, needs and aspirations of women in disadvantaged and rural areas, taking these views forward to influence policy development and future government planning. This will ultimately result in the empowerment of local women in disadvantaged and rurally isolated communities.

Catherine Cooke, Co-ordinator of Foyle Women’s Information Network, said: “This launch is exactly what the Consortium is all about, getting women together and finding out what affects them in their day to day lives. As part of this Consortium we will take what we learn and feed into policy making, aiming to make this a fair society for everyone.

“FWIN are delighted to be a part of the Women’s Regional Consortium and we are looking forward to working as part of this regional group.”

“Put simply this consortium is all about giving women in disadvantaged and rural areas a voice, and making sure that voice is heard.”
