Peace, Power & Patriarchy A two day conference organised by Foyle Women’s Information Network – Peace Power & Patriarchy – was held in the Guildhall last week.

The conference, which hosted 120 women, was supported by the Peace III Programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body and delivered by the NW Peace III Cluster.

The conference began on Thursday September 11th and there was a diverse range of workshops and speakers throughout the two days. Attendees heard from Laila Atshan, a psychosocial counsellor based in Ramallah.

They also heard from Tracey McGrory who presented a song and short film about Laura Gailey- the only woman named on the war memorial in the city. As part of the event guests created an artwork with help of artist Louise McElhinney. Day two finished with a meal in the delightful surroundings of the Guildhall and an after dinner speech from renowned local actress and singer, Bronagh Gallagher.

Day two opened with a fascinating workshop – Patriarchy and How It Affects The Way We Think – by Professor Cathy Higgins. There was also a short drama about the history of the city presented by In Your Space. This was followed by a panel discussion by Catherine Cooke, Co-ordinator of FWIN, Maureen Hetherington Co-ordinator of The Junction and Seamus Farrell, Junction Committee Member.

The event finished with an official tour of the City Walls and the Peace Bridge.

Catherine Cooke, Co-ordinator of FWIN, said: “This two day event was a great success and the whole team at FWIN are delighted with how it went.

“I’d like to thank all our speakers, participants and the staff at the Guildhall who worked so hard to ensure the conference was engaging for everyone involved. I’d also like to thank the North West Peace III Partnership who funded the event. Most importantly I’d like to thank each and every woman who attended, without their continued support and participation events of this scale simply wouldn’t be possible.”

Fiona Lafferty, Project Officer with North West Peace III, added: “The Peace Power & Patriarchy Conference was a great success and reached so many women from all sections of our community.

“This is an event Peace III were proud to be a part of and we have received extremely positive feedback, heaping praise on the conference and all those who took part.”
