Mayor launches FWIN’s Christmas Appeal

Mayor of Derry, Brenda Stevenson, has launched Foyle Women’s Information Network’s (FWIN) ‘Derry/Londonderry Spirit of Christmas Appeal’.

FWIN are asking people to show support to those in need by filling a shoe box with gifts for local children whose families are struggling this Christmas.

Mayor Stevenson supported the campaign saying: “This is a fantastic idea and I fully support FWIN in this appeal.

“There are children throughout this city that need our help and Christmas can be a difficult time for some families. This appeal is a great opportunity for everyone to show support for those in need and bring a smile to a child’s face this Christmas.”

Co-ordinator of FWIN, Catherine Cooke, said: “The Shoe Box Christmas Gift is a tried and tested method of brightening the lives of thousands of children around the world. In these hard times Derry/Londonderry needs charity to begin at home with help from all the communities throughout the city.

“The appeal is calling for your support to invite friends and family to help just one child in need living within the region this coming Christmas.

“Other cities like Glasgow and Fife have already started a 'Spirit of Christmas' group with amazing success. We believe we can offer the same level of support to local needy children right here.”

Decorate a Shoe Box filled with treats, pyjamas, gloves, toys or a soft cuddly toy to love and it will be donated to one of the many children in and around this city who will not receive gifts of any kind this Christmas. Selection boxes, toys, games are also welcome and for teenagers toiletries etc.

It is important to label your shoebox stating if it is for a boy or girl and what age they are: 0-2yrs    3-5yrs    6-10yrs    10-12yrs    13-15yrs    16 -18yrs

All shoeboxes can be dropped off at: Holywell Building, 8 -14 Bishop Street,  Derry / Londonderry, BT48 6PW.

The decorated shoe-boxes will be distributed throughout the city by various local charities
